Rustic Lodge

Rustic PendantNestled in the woods on the shore of Trout Lake, this private residence is the realization of a couples' long time dream. Although the home looks historic, it was just recently constructed as a vacation retreat. Its authentic feel is inspired by early historic 1900s lodges was essential.

Guided by the homeowners vision, the design was a fitting collaboration between Daniel Benson Builders, Konstant Architecture and Planning, local artisans, and Brass Light Gallery.

With plenty of room for three generations, this timber home is grand in scale. The residence has two wings and central core which contains the foyer and an expansive living space. On the ground floor the master suite is housed in one wing, while the opposite wing contains the kitchen, dining room, office, mudroom and laundry. Two second floor wings sleep adult children and grandchildren.

The lodgepole pine was sourced from the Canadian Rockies while local white pine was procured for tongue and groove paneling and cabinetry. The foundation and impressive fireplace employ local Wisconsin granite. Jonathan Kostreva of Bear View Ridge Rustic Furniture used indigenous twigs and birch bark to create the highly patterned custom bar.

The vintage feel was achieved by careful consideration of colors, finishes and decorative details. "The lodgepole pines were skip peeled instead of clean peeled to retain some of the inner bark and lend an old world feel," recounts the project manager, Fred Wienderbauer. Several color options for the chinking were scrutinized in various states of natural light prior to final decisions. Color choices for interior decorative elements were drawn from the blues and greens of the granite, and honey and brown tones of the natural wood to create a cohesive palette.

Lighting was a crucial ingredient. The aesthetically sensitive owners knew that recessed lights were out of the question! They challenged Brass Light Gallery's design team with providing functional illumination for the sizable structure in an architecturally appropriate rustic style, both inside and out.

Many light fixtures are custom designs to meet scale requirements, while others are classic Brass Light Gallery American-inspired designs. Metal finishes are either Verdigris, echoing the granite, or Architectural Bronze, relating to the dark brown timber and oil rubbed bronze hardware. Natural bark shades complement the texture of the skip peeled logs while sheepskin shades provide warm honey tones to complement the pine paneling. All glass shades and glass panels emit natural tones like our Gold White Iridescent Art Glass in our Windowpane Pendants.

This charmed accomplishment both inside and out, makes visitors feel as if they've stepped back to a more leisurely time. A place where you turn your cell phone off and read a book next to a roaring fire, or swing on the back porch. The design team created a tangible ambiance which surpassed the clients' imagination.
